When Carol unzipped the door, our brothers, Adam and Brendan were standing there, not looking too excited either. It was good to know that summer vacation wasn’t just going to be ruined for the girls. “Dad said we’re going to take a short hike up that hill and back down before dinner,” Brendan informed us. “Hill?” Emma said. “Looks more like a mountain to me.” “I’m just repeating what Dad told us,” Brendan said looking annoyed.
“We figure the sooner we get it over with, the sooner we an come back, eat dinner, and go to bed,” Adam said, leaning in like he was telling us a secret. If we’d had real beds, I probably would have agreed with him on that, but as it was, I wasn’t sure that we were going to be getting any sleep. Still, I had to agree that getting it over with was a good idea. Find more details here http://www.luxury-resort-guide.com/caribbean/all-inclusive-resorts-in-st-thomas. Once the boys had left, the Emma, Carol, and I put on the hiking boots that had specifically been purchased for this vacation. I wasn’t so sure about the hiking boots even. They weren’t even broken in yet, and I wasn’t looking forward the blisters that were going to greet me after the hike.
“I’m not even sure that hiking is worth food and sleep. The food didn’t look that great, and this ground is so hard that I’m pretty sure that I’ll never be able to get to sleep on it,” Emma complained agreeing with my unspoken thoughts. I knew that Emma was probably having the hardest time with the vacation. At least Carol and I are a little tomboyish. Emma, though, is very much a girly girl.
“Adam’s right, though, the sooner we get it over with, the better,” I said as I stood up to leave the tent. Carol and Emma followed right behind me. Our parents and our brothers were already waiting outside. The contrast in expressions was amazing. Mom and Dad both looked really excited. Adam and Brendan both looked like they’d rather have two broken legs than go on this hike. “Ready troops?” Dad asked excitedly.
We all nodded, despite our feelings that we really didn’t want to do this. As Dad started towards the hill, which still looked more like a mountain to all of us, we all followed behind. The trip to the hill was quiet. I wondered if the whole vacation was going to be this quiet. I had a feeling that it was going to be a long vacation if someone didn’t start talking soon.
